HPC faculty:
Dr. Geri Miller: Ella Stephens Barret Award

A special thanks as well to all the HPC Community Counseling students who volunteered their time in helping both the American Counseling Association and North Carolina Counseling Association to put on a great conference. There were approximately 4,000 counselors from around the country/world at the conference!
Sally Atkins (HPC) received the The Samuel T. Gladding Inspiration and Motivation Award presented by the Association for Creativity in Counseling which is a division of the American Counseling Association. The award honors Sally for "fostering connections and cooperation through creative expression".
Susan Musilli (former staff member of LRE, now in the Dean’s Office) will be awarded the Plemmons Leadership Medallion at the University Convocation on September 10th. The Plemmons Leadership Medallion award was established by the Board of Trustees to recognize the contributions of faculty, staff and students who have made significant contributions to the quality of students’ lives outside the classroom.
Congratulations to the Communication Disorders Clinic for its fine dedication program last Friday; the clinic facility in University Hall was officially named the Charles and Geneva Scott Communication Disorders Clinic. In addition, the audiology suite in the new facility was named in honor of Fred Robinette, a long-time employee and supporter of ASU. Special thanks to Mary Ruth Sizer and the clinic staff for putting together the event.
Oversight
My apologies for not having a Dean’s Update last week; I thought I had sent it before I left town but our webmaster indicated it did not come through; so I have combined relevant news from last week into this week’s Update. Pardon if it is a bit long while we get caught up.
Successful ASU Scholars Weekend
This past weekend, 65 gifted and talented students from the region gathered at Camp Broadstone for a weekend of study and fun; the students selected from a choice of classes on African drumming, Forensic science, photography or exercise science. All classes were taught by ASU faculty. These weekends occur twice a year and are sponsored through the RCOE in collaboration with the Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP).
Kurdistan Visitors
We have two faculty from Kurdistan visiting us for the remainder of the semester. They are here to learn as much as possible about how American institutions of higher education work with curriculum design and pedagogy; our visitors are available to speak to classes or clubs about culture and education in Kurdistan.
Dr Fatima Hasan was born in Diala Province, earned her BA in English Education from the University of Baghdad, her MA and PhD in Education and Psychology also from the University of Baghdad. She is currently the head of the English Department at Salahaddin University in Erbil, Kurdistan, Iraq. Fatima has attended numerous conferences on educational development in the Region. She has also submitted many articles on higher education for local newspapers.
Mohammed Hussein was born in Diawaniya, Kurdistan. He earned a BA from Salahaddin University and an MA in Education from Diala University. He currently serves as the Head of the Education Department in the College of Education at Kalar. Mohammed has also participated in many human rights conferences on genocide and its effects in Kurdistan.
Contact with them can be made through Sara Zimmerman zimmermnsj@appstate.edu, Barbara Bonham bonhambs@appstate.edu or Lori Mason lorimason@horseshoem.com.
Craft Model to be Voted Upon
Probably one of the most significant faculty votes in recent memory will be cast on April 17. All faculty should have received a recent email from the Provost identifying the actual language upon which the vote will be case and outlining the process whereby that vote will be take on April 17. Below is a copy from the first part of his memo; if, for some reason, you did not receive the entire email memo, let me know and I will be happy to forward it to you. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of Every faculty member doing everything in his or her power to cast a vote, yes or no on this critical issue. The essence of this vote goes to the very heart of what I believe we are all about in the college. Regardless of your stance, be empowered by casting your vote. Feel free to raise issues about the proposed change in the DPC at department meetings (I know most departments have discussed the issue at least once if not more).Again, exercise your right to vote on April 17 even if it may be inconvenient for you.
The university will hold a vote on a proposal to amend the Faculty Handbook, Article 2, Section 3, on April 17 from 3:00-6:00 p.m. in the IG Greer Auditorium. The amendment proposes to substitute the so-called “Craft Model” for our current DPC model. The specific language of the constitutional proposal is given below, and an explanation of the “Craft Model” is available at:
http://www.facsen.appstate.edu/documents/CraftModelExplanation_000.pdf
The Constitutional Vote
Existing Faculty Handbook Language from Article II, Section 3
“Those eligible to serve on and participate in election of members to departmental personnel committees are full time faculty in the ranks of lecturer, instructor, assistant professor, associate professor, and professor.”
Replacement Language for Article II, Section 3 (to become effective August 2010)
“Faculty eligible to vote on personnel matters regarding reappointment, promotion, or tenure must be employed full time and possess the tenure status and rank at or above the rank under consideration. Non-tenure-track and pre-tenured faculty are ineligible to vote on personnel actions regarding tenured or tenure track faculty.”

Charlotte-Mecklenberg Evaluation of Schools
A new means of evaluating individual schools is being piloted in the Charlotte-Mecklenberg School District; the evaluation focuses on six measures: achievement, curriculum, learning and teaching, leadership, learning environment, and parent/community involvement. The intent is to provide each school with an assessment of its strengths and areas for improvement. See Charlotte Observer, March 22, 2009 for more details.
