Donation of Smart Technology Resources
Thanks to Diana Beasley, former North Carolina Teacher of the Year, who generously donated an array of Smart Technologies to the college. As part of her contribution, we now have the follow resources available: SmartBoard (Media Lab), SynchronEyes software ( 218 lab), and Smart Airliner wireless slate (215 Lab). Detailed specifications for these resources may be found here. Please take a moment to thank Diana for her unselfish contribution.
University Personal Web Space: Moving from VMS to Linux (Apache) Server
In an effort to modernize existing web services for faculty, staff, and students, Information Technology Services will be implementing a new Linux web server. The new web services will be a vast improvement over the old VMS system. We anticipate the new web space to be available for use around February 12, 2008. Below are a few of the improved features.
*All Appalachian faculty, staff, and students will have web space available.
Features:
- Quota: 50MB storage
- Supports sFTP (secure FTP) and SCP (secure copy)
-Plain old FTP is no longer available. Telnet and shell access is not available.
-Permissions for directories and files can be set through a sFTP client, if needed.
-Accessible with Dreamweaver, Contribute, Fetch (Mac), Cyberduck (Mac), FileZilla (Win), and WinSCP (Win)

- Supports basic PHP 4 scripting – some functions are disabled, such as phpinfo, exec, etc…
- Supports .htaccess and .htpasswd for custom configuration of errors messages (401, 403, 404, etc…), redirects, and basic authentication on a per-user/per-directory basis.
Future availability: Perl via CGIWrap and WebDav access

Transition:
There will be a transition period from the old VMS system to the new server implementation. Files that existed on your old VMS account were moved to the new system in late December. So any changes since that time will need to be uploaded to the new server. Chris Larson, RCOE Webmaster, will hold a series of workshops to assist users in the setup and use of the new web space. To request assistance please submit a request via the RCOE Help Request System. The RCOE Webmaster’s office will work to notify users of transition dates and issues.
